SEUSSICAL CHARACTERS

CAT IN THE HAT

THE CAT IN THE HAT is the essence of mischief, fun and imagination. THE CAT stirs things up, causes some trouble, but always sets things right again, helping JOJO to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story of the show together. Must be able to play many different roles, respond to all types of music styles, lead out comic cameos and improvise with the audience.

JOJO

JOJO is a “Thinker” a smart child with a wild imagination. He can be played as a being a little bit awkward, a bit of a loner or simply a rambunctious kid whose “thinks” get him in trouble. By the end of the show he learns what it means to use his talents to be the hero. Must have energy on stage and enjoy being in a narrative and active role.

HORTON THE ELEPHANT

HORTON THE ELEPHANT is a gentle giant, that is handsome and big-hearted. He is steadfast and responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. Although Gertrude is in love with him he hardly notices due to his devotion to the Whos and The Egg. He is very un-self-conscious….his view of the world never changes and he believes in its goodness.

GERTRUDE MCFUZZ

GERTRUDE MCFUZZ is self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn’t perfect. Gertrude is madly in love with Horton and changes during the show from a vain, neurotic, nervous and shy bird into a confident bird who grows up and stops worrying about her appearance and finally feels good enough about herself to commit herself to Horton.

MAYZIE LA BIRD
MAYZIE LA BIRD is a self-centered, selfish and vain bird with the “beautiful” tail that Gertrude is jealous of. Mayzie is the envy of all the girl animals and will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can to get what she wants including getting Horton to sit on her nest while she vacations. But Mayzie isn’t all bad. She has a moment of generosity when she gives up her egg to Horton as she realizes she isn’t the kind of person who’d be good parent and does the best she can for her egg.

MR. & MRS. MAYOR

MR. & MRS. MAYOR obviously the most important citizens of Whoville “who” run the town. Now hopeful that HORTON has found them yet facing war themselves, they try to carry on in Whoville as they do each year with their traditions. Their biggest dilemma is their own imaginative son JOJO and as his parents they try to raise him to “think” less. Although JOJO gets in many predicaments they love him very much and in the end, tell JOJO “to Think of something”. These characters play a very important role in the entire show and have many scenes where they lead the story along. These characters have a serious side to their acting yet the part is fun to give personality to.

GENERAL GENGUS KAHN SCHMITZ

GENERAL GENGUS KAHN SCHMITZ is bursting with pride at the military academy he runs, and the boys he turns out. He is not mean, just really proud! He is doing the right thing for the boys! He is making the world a better place! A wildly played character with speaking and singing mixed, lots of style and persona. He is a comic character because it’s clear that he’s so misguided.

CADETS

CADETS. There are CADETS OF WHOVILLE under the direction of the General who will march in forms and become all they can be in the academy to fight the “butter side downers” or in other words anyone who “thinks” differently than them.

SOUR KANGAROO

SOUR KANGAROO isn’t really sour at all. She’s just got a lot of attitude! She is a lot of fun, brassy and loves to speak her mind. “R-E-S-P-E-C-K, Oh, Please take that speck away!”

BABY KANGAROO

BABY KANGAROO is the Sour Kangaroo’s side kick, and acts and performs throughout the show with the Sour Kangaroo as a supporting actor and singer.

WICKERSHAM BROTHERS

WICKERSHAM BROTHERS These are not bad guys! They’re simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at other’s expense. They enjoy “hangin” around with each other making music together on the street corner and playing off one another. Must like to move on stage, sing and act.

BIRD GIRLS

BIRD GIRLS are a “clique” of 6 to 10 girls that are “back-up type singers”. Must love to SING and harmonize with their other Bird Girl friends and have dance moves to make the lyrics come to life. The Bird Girls come in and out of the show on many, many songs and scenes.

THE GRINCH

THE GRINCH turns out to be not so “Grinchy” at all. In Seussical he demonstrates that he still plays out his Christmas tale for all the Whos and is the annual favorite citizen during the Holiday season. This part takes a lot of solo character acting and delivery. The Grinch appears in all scenes with all the Whos but of course is costumed in his expected attire standing out from the rest of the Whos.

JUNGLE ANIMALS

JUNGLE ANIMALS are 50’s styled animals that love to rock ‘n roll. Must enjoy being on stage, singing out and dancing to the beat. Costumes will not be masked, jungle animals are real people at heart and add an important dimension to the play.

THING ONE AND THING TWO

THING 1 & 2 aid the CAT IN THE HAT during the show. You are the side kick of the CAT and help bring on props, transition scenes and must have an expert knowledge of the entire show, each character, their cues and lyrics by the time curtain goes up. This role is single cast for all performances.

CITIZENS OF WHOVILLE

THE WHOS are a lot like all of us, just so small that they can’t be seen. They reside in Whoville, and have many wonderful traits. Each person who play a Who will be encouraged to have their own personal and unique character. You are in many songs right from the beginning of the show. In the end the Whos are finally heard and the audience cheers for each of you and your town and that you have finally been discovered. There are several cameo roles including CINDY LOU WHO, MRS. UMBROSO, MAX THE DOG, and other parts to be awarded within the Who community.

VLAD VLADIKOFF

VLAD VLADIKOFF is the eagle bird that is handed off the protected clover of HORTON. He flies all around and causes havoc for Whoville. This actor must be able to take charge of the stage during a long song while this important part of the musical plays out. Vlad (as we will nickname the part) will also appear in all of the jungle scenes that require jungle animals.

JUDGE YERTLE THE TURLE

YERTLE THE TURTLE the judge in the courtroom scene that resolves the entire conflict of the musical. He commands the courtroom and has a cameo solo performance. The judge will also appear in all of the jungle scenes that require jungle animals.

These acts will be asked for at auditions and you can explain and demonstrate, in 30 seconds or less, your special talent. We are excited to see these!

"Players Anonymous is giving special recognition for excellence in community musical theater this summer to Alpine community theater for a thrilling production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Sell-out audiences gave standing ovations for all eight performances. By double casting, Laura Snyder, the executive director, was able to include over two hundred performers… an amazing feat using families with young children as well as seasoned actors. The whole show revolved around the talents of Scott and Sue Carey who accompanied and directed a full orchestra of local talent. The play showcased award-winning actors such as Matt Dobson who played Gaston and a local 6′5" 275 lb Beast with a deep resonating voice, named Wendel Smith. Erica Glenn and Emilee Copier took turns as Belle and are as beautiful as they are talented singers and actresses. Every role was perfectly cast and the costumes were professionally presented by Kristen Arnold. The props and scenery were exquisite. This is an award-winning stage play and hold it up for all to see as an example of what a community working together can do."

Alpine Community Theater’s 2007 summer production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at Timberline Middle School directed by Laura Snyder, Leilani Christensen and Diane Burningham. The play showcased award-winning actors such as Matt Dobson who played Gaston, and a local 6′5" 275 lb Beast with a deep resonating voice, named Wendel Smith. Erica Glenn and Emilee Copier took turns as Belle and are as beautiful as they are talented singers and actresses.

Every role was perfectly cast and the costumes were professionally presented by Kristen Arnold and Kimberli Grant. The props by Bill and Linda McGhee and scenery by Paul Thompson and Chris Culver were award winning. Many thanks to the professional and supportive volunteer production staff.

Mrs. Potts was played by Julie Cole, Chip by Spencer Jarrett and Harper McGee, Madame De La Grande Bouche by Diana Jex and Aubrey Warner, Cogsworth by Clayton Morgan, Lumiere by Stephen Tobian, Babette by Jess Wallace and Brittani Buck, Lefou by Keith Allen and Mark Buchanan, Adult Prince by Adam Chase, Monsier D’Arque by Tom Grant, Young Prince by Christian Jolley, Enchantress by Jade Jolley, and Maurice by Pete Rossi
